Our Statement On Black Lives Matter
The Secular Therapy Project joins the millions around the world who are saddened, horrified, and outraged by the recent murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and Ahmaud Arbery, along with countless other killings of Black lives. We acknowledge these killings are not isolated incidents, but are part of a centuries-old structure of systemic and institutionalized racism that includes the nature of policing in the United States.
This is not the time, nor has it ever been the time, for therapists to be passive bystanders, to deny or diminish lived experiences, or to dictate the response to these injustices. These are the actions that uphold white supremacy. Now is the time to listen, to learn, and to act according to the needs and demands of the Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities.
We encourage you to familiarize yourself with Black-led organizations in your community who are on the front lines in the fight for racial justice. Listen to and learn about their priorities and initiatives. Show up when you are asked, donate when you can, and provide other material support when needed.
We say, unequivocally, Black Lives Matter.
